nikon d90 autofocus not working

I have the same problem, my nikon d90 auto focus in auto mode but when the camera is on manual mode and the lens is on auto, it will not auto focus. Can you turn on the grid or not? I have the D5100, not the D90:) All my other lenses work fine, it's just this lens. 8:59PM, 18 October 2008 PST Nikon D90 doesn't have the AF-On button.
